Tips for Choosing the Perfect Bed Frame

Needless to say, a bed is the main element of any bedroom. The bed usually consists of two elements: a comfortable mattress and a good frame that suits its size perfectly. It’s quite important to choose the right bed frame to get maximum durability, comfort, and functionality.

What should be considered when choosing a bed frame?

The bed frame is a base where your mattress is placed. It consists of the nest elements: supports (legs), base (solid or consisting of individual lamellas), side panels (side panels), headboard, and footboard. We recommend paying attention to many basic nuances and parameters when you are selecting a bed frame to meet all your requirements and provide a comfortable rest.

CHOOSING THE NEEDED SIZE

According to the bed’s dimensions, standard frames can be divided into several main types. Twin and Full are two options for a comfortable sleep for teenagers and people of short stature (made for mattresses in sizes 99 x 191 and 137 x 191 cm). Couples or single people who prefer to have unlimited freedom of space even during their sleep should pay attention to king-size bed frames. The Queen frame is available in a variety of sizes (width from 150 to 160 cm, length 200 cm), King – 180 x 200, and 200 x 200 cm. The first option is suitable for couples who like to sleep in each other’s arms and do not experience discomfort from the partner’s touch (intended for small rooms), and the second is recommended for more spacious bedrooms. Many modern manufacturers can create an individual frame for you using the provided measurements. When you are choosing a mattress and a frame, it is necessary to consider the height of people – for a comfortable sleep, the length of the product should be at least 15 cm longer. Also, when installing a bed in a room, make sure you have left a passage of sufficient width – at least 70 cm between the bed and the walls.

WHICH BASE TO SELECT: SOLID OR MADE OF SLATS?

The base is the support for the mattress. Even if you have chosen the most comfortable orthopedic mattress, a wrong base can negate all its advantages. There are two main types of bases: solid and made of lamellas (thin slats). A one-piece shield made of plywood or chipboard is more versatile – it is suitable for mattresses of any kind (but in some models, due to the rigid base, their orthopedic properties can be reduced, so you should consider this when choosing). In addition, people with back problems are often advised to sleep on hard, flat surfaces, and it’s an additional vote for one-piece shields. But when choosing this base, you have to know its main features: this base often does not have holes, and over time, the mattress may begin to rot due to the lack of sufficient ventilation and the impossibility of evaporating the absorbed moisture. Lamellar bases (which can be made of both wood and plastic) provide unhindered ventilation and create an additional orthopedic effect because their planks bend under the sleeping body. The number of planks depends on users – the greater the weight, the more slats must be attached to the base.

CHOOSING THE MATERIAL

Modern bed manufacturers use a wide variety of materials to create bed frames, and the most popular material is natural wood. Solid wood products are environment-friendly, durable, and aesthetically presentable. At the same time, they have a rather high price (beech, oak, ash), but pine and birch are more affordable. The frame made of pressed wood is even cheaper and can be made in any color, but you have to keep in mind that unsafe chemicals are often used in this material production. These chemicals can evaporate during use, which may affect people’s health negatively. It is strongly not recommended to use furniture made of pressed wood, especially in bedrooms. One of the most durable and interesting materials (especially when creating a high-tech interior) is metal. The bed frame made of metal is durable and presentable, and it can also be styled for any interior, covered with a suitable fabric or leather.

ADDITIONAL USEFUL HINTS

Also, when choosing, consider the presence of a headboard and footboard in the frame. Following the rules of ergonomics, a comfortable and practical bed should have at least one back. This provides the user with additional comfort (you can lean on the headboard while reading a book or watching TV), as well as a sense of security. It’s easy to organize a place for compact storage of things thanks to frames equipped with convenient drawers.

For people with a big weight and when using a heavy mattress, it is necessary to provide additional central support in the center of the bed frame. This is an additional stand that will help to avoid sagging of the mattress, early failure of the slats, or the solid base break. When you are buying a frame, keep in mind that it must have a mandatory margin around the perimeter – at least 1 cm relative to the mattress you are going to lay on it.
